Complete transparency about anonymity and privacy when sending anonymous messages on TellATell
Your identity is completely protected when you send anonymous messages on TellATell. Recipients cannot see:
Anonymous messaging means anonymous. We take sender privacy seriously.
No name, username, email, or account information is ever revealed when you send anonymous tells. Even if you're logged in, you can still send completely anonymous messages.
Your exact IP address is never shown. We only store a hashed version for abuse prevention. Recipients cannot see your city, country, or location when you send anonymous questions.
Anonymous messages are stored securely without any connection to your identity. There's no way to link a message back to you unless you explicitly reveal yourself.
Technical details like your ISP, connection type, or network information are never exposed to recipients of your anonymous tells.
While your anonymity is protected, we do collect minimal technical data to prevent spam, harassment, and abuse. This data is never shown to message recipients unless they have Plus (see below).
We store a cryptographic hash of your IP address. This is a one-way encrypted string that can't be reversed to reveal your actual IP. Used only to prevent the same person from spamming multiple messages.
Device type (mobile/desktop), browser name (Chrome, Safari), and general timestamp. This helps us improve the platform and detect automated bots sending anonymous messages.
If you consent to analytics cookies, we track where visitors came from (e.g., "Instagram story" or "Twitter bio"). This helps profile owners understand their traffic but doesn't reveal your identity.
Important: All this data is stored securely in our database and is never displayed to the person receiving your anonymous tell unless they have TellATell Plus (see next section).
If you send an anonymous message to someone with TellATell Plus, they receive privacy-safe hints about the sender — but still NOT your identity.
Bottom Line: Even with Plus hints, your anonymity is preserved. These clues help recipients understand their audience but cannot be used to identify you specifically.
Avoid including details that could identify you (inside jokes only you'd know, specific events, writing style, etc.). Anonymous messaging only works if you keep it anonymous!
While not required, using private browsing mode ensures no browser cookies or login sessions leak information. This is extra protection for sender privacy.
For maximum anonymity, send anonymous tells from a coffee shop or public network. This adds an extra layer between you and the recipient, though our IP hashing already protects you.
Even though logged-in users can send anonymously, logging out ensures zero connection between your account and the anonymous message. Not required, but an option for the extra cautious.
While we protect anonymity, we do not tolerate abuse, threats, or illegal activity. If someone sends threatening or illegal content, we cooperate with law enforcement and can provide technical data (IP hashes, timestamps) to identify bad actors.
Technical logs (IP hashes, timestamps) are retained for security purposes but automatically purged after 90 days. Anonymous tells remain on the platform until deleted by the recipient or profile owner.
We're fully GDPR compliant. You have the right to request data deletion, view what we store, and opt out of analytics cookies. Visit our Privacy Policy for full details.
